One of my favorite cinematic events each year is the South By Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas. For the past several years at least one or two of the movies that I see at the festival end up making it onto my year-end top-ten list. Last year it was Air Guitar Nation, Live Free Or Die, and Behind The Mask. Since all of those movies have yet to be distributed theatrically (Behind The Mask comes out later this year), if I hadn't seen them at SXSW, I wouldn't have seen them at all. After the break I point out some of the highlights of the just-announced SXSW'07 Schedule.

Today's the first day of SXSW 2007, and I got into Austin with just enough time to grab my badge and dash over to Alamo South Lamar for a 6:45 screening of Sisters. This is a big improvement over last year, when I missed out on all of the opening night's films because I got into town just after they stopped handing out badges for the day. Not to start off my coverage with a gripe, but if Dentler or any of the other SXSW higher-ups are reading this, there really ought to be a 'Get Your Badge By Mail' or 'Have a Friend Pick Up Your Badge' option. It'd make the first day a lot less stressful for those of us coming from out of town. But other than that, I love you guys. Anyway... on to the films.

Today was my last full day at SXSW, and I've officially hit the point where the 20ish movies I've seen have started to run together. It's a weird feeling... I'll hear a line at the end of a movie that reminds me of something else I've seen recently... but I'll have a hard time figuring out whether it's a line from the beginning of the movie I'm watching, or from something I saw on Friday. So that - and my lack of sleep - will explain why these notes have been getting shorter and (probably) less coherent.
